Driving for the Community

"Living a long life is an achievement to be proud of, but the older people get, the more they are at risk of being socially excluded. Far too many older people who reach a "ripe old age" discover that living at home without decent support or social interaction can feel more like a curse than a blessing."

The Lions' motto is "We Serve", which really is just a way of saying that we give help and support where it's needed, in whatever way we can. Age Concern's Friday Club meets the first and third Friday of every month to provide a meeting place for elderly residents who would otherwise spend the majority of their time alone. As one of Friday Club's members said to me, "I can go a whole week and not see or speak to anyone. I'm so terribly lonely." However, even when services such as Friday Club are available, they can be difficult for those who need them most to reach, particularly those with limited finances, mobility or other health problems. That's where we help.

We provide drivers to collect elderly residents from their homes and take them to Friday Club and return them home safely afterwards.
